How We Turned a $10,000 Summer Trip to Italy Into a 350,000‑Point Redemption
This summer, our family of four took an unforgettable trip to Rome and Naples, flying Air France and staying in a mix of hotels and vacation rentals. What made the trip even sweeter? We used credit card points strategically — and saved over $10,000 in flights and lodging.
Here’s exactly how we did it.
Flights: Air France Redemptions to Italy
Seattle → Rome (One‑Way Award Flight)
We booked Air France from Seattle to Rome using 120,000 points total (30,000 per person). Cash price would have been $980 per person.
All points were transferred from American Express Membership Rewards.
Savings: ~$3,920
Naples → Seattle (Paid Fare Using Points)
For the return, we booked Air France again:
- 100,000 points total (25,000 per person)
- Cash price: $1,029 per person
- We used 85,000 Amex points + 15,000 Capitial One Venture points
Savings: ~$4,116

Lodging: Rome + Naples
Rome — 3 Nights (Chase Travel Portal)
We booked a hotel in Rome for 49,635 Chase points, worth $923 in the Chase Travel Portal.
Because we previously held the Chase Sapphire Reserve, we benefited from the 1.5× multiplier, making the redemption even stronger.
Savings: ~$923
Naples — 5 Nights (Vacation Rental via Capital One Travel Portal)
Naples was the trickiest part — European hotel rooms are smaller, and booking two rooms (even on points) would have cost a fortune.
So we got creative.
We found a vacation rental that could be booked through the Capital One Venture Travel Portal:
- 84,922 Venture points
- Cash value: $981
Savings: ~$981
This gave us more space, a better location, and a more authentic experience — all while staying within our points strategy.

Total Trip Value & Points Used
Total Out‑of‑Pocket Value Avoided
- Airfare savings: ~$8,036
- Lodging savings: ~$1,904
- Total saved: ~$9,940
Total Points Used
We redeemed ~350,000 points across:
- American Express Membership Rewards
- Chase Ultimate Rewards
- Capital One Venture
- Virgin (VX) points
For a peak‑summer trip for four people, this was an incredible redemption.
Why This Strategy Worked
Europe in the summer is expensive — especially for families. Hotel rooms are smaller, and booking two rooms (even on points) can double your cost.
By mixing:
- Air France Flying Blue redemptions
- Chase Travel Portal hotel bookings
- Capital One Venture vacation rentals
…we created a flexible, multi‑program strategy that maximized value.
The key was not relying on just one loyalty program. Instead, we used the strengths of each:
- Amex → Air France for cheap award flights
- Capital One points → Cheap top‑offs for Air France redemptions
- Chase → Hotels with the 1.5× multiplier
- Capital One → Vacation rentals for more space
This let us build a trip that was comfortable, spacious, and affordable — even during peak season.
Final Thoughts
Italy in the summer is magical — and with the right points strategy, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Our Rome + Naples adventure was one of our favorite family trips ever, and using points made it even sweeter.
If you’re planning Europe with a family, consider mixing:
- Award flights
- Travel portal bookings
- Vacation rentals
- Multiple credit card ecosystems
It gives you flexibility, saves thousands, and opens the door to experiences you might otherwise skip.
