Day 1 – Sunday Madrid: Arrival and Exploration
Arriving in Madrid after a red-eye flight from Seattle, we were greeted by the warm Spanish sun and the promise of adventure. With six eager travelers in tow, we split into two taxis and made our way to our cozy abode for the week, the Petit Palace Santa Barbara. Remarkably, we found accommodations that accommodated all of us in a single room, complete with two bunk beds and a sanctuary for Mom and Dad.
Eager to begin our exploration, we ventured towards the bustling main street of Gran Via, capturing our first snapshots of the city’s enchanting skyline. Our journey continued to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, where we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere and marveled at the historical landmarks.
As we started getting hungry, we ventured to Mercado de San Miguel, indulging in an array of delectable Spanish delights. From savory tapas to irresistible churros from Chocolateria San Gines, we sampled the best of Madrid’s culinary offerings before savoring some mouthwatering tacos at TKO Tacos Clavel.

With our energy replenished, we embarked on a day of exploration, starting with savory empanadas from Empanadas Malvon. Our journey led us to the serene oasis of El Retiro Park, where we admired the tranquil waters of the Great Pond and explored the park’s picturesque surroundings.
As our young adventurers sought retail therapy along Calle de Fuencarral, we indulged in a feast of tapas at El Tigre Sidra Bar, fueling our afternoon adventures. After a leisurely siesta, we dined on Latin American cuisine at Latino Arepa before treating ourselves to Amorino Gelato with breathtaking views atop a shopping center.
